Worldwide, 71% of the rural population has access to improved water supply and 38% has access to improved sanitation. In rural Africa, 47% of the population has access to improved water.
Fresh water is also becoming increasingly unusable because of pollution. But given increasing populations Worldwatch identifies one way of easing demands for water - importing grain. Agriculture is by far the biggest user of water in Africa accounting for 88% of water use. It takes about 1,000 tonnes of water to produce every tonne of grain.
The water crisis in Africa has become a widespread dilemma over the years by causing numerous diseases and getting in the way of other daily needs. This issue needs to be fixed in order for these people to live long healthy lives.
